The drain field is where the liquid waste from your home travels to be absorbed by the soil.
There are two primary reasons for drain field failure.

First is simply age After approximately 30 years of use, the beneficial microbes in the drain field build up to a level that the soil just can’t absorb anymore liquid. With this type of failure, repair is not an option and your drain field will have to be replaced.
Second is lack of septic tank maintenance Infrequent septic tank emptying will allow sludge and scum to build up to a point that the solids and grease cannot separate properly from the liquids and enter the drain field causing a blockage.

According to the EPA, you should have your septic tank pumped every three to five years.
